In this group exhibition 10 artists show work with the theme of water and steam. Opening evening 1 June 6-9. The theme for the E17 Art Trail 2017 is STEAM, the acronym that recognises the place of Art alongside the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

I have two paintings showing in the exhibition: 'Sunshine Through Clear Water' and 'Sparkling Water'. They are both oil on panel, framed.

After the Sea

After The Sea
An exhibition on the seafront in Margate.

Look out of the window of Bernie’s Chocolate Bar and you’ll see the shining Margate sands, the sea and across the harbour the Turner Contemporary. Inside, for the whole month of October, the walls will be filled with work by two artists: Julie Caves (that's me) and H Locke. The exhibition will include over 30 paintings, drawings and prints.

Having set up a studio in Margate in 2014, Julie Caves and H Locke spend a lot of time by the sea – beachcombing, painting and drawing – with regular pit stops in Bernie’s to defrost from the off-season wintery seaside weather. They have explored Margate and Cliftonville during the recent years of transition for the area and this has heavily influenced the work they are showing.

In the Function Room of the lovely, re-opened Heathcote Arms - 344 Grove Green Rd, London E11 4EA. (You will pass through this room if you are heading to their very nice garden.) A 5-minute walk from Leytonstone station.

Leytonstone Arts Trail 2016

This will be the ninth Leytonstone Arts Trail!

Preview evenings on 30th June and 1st July will kick-off the Trail which runs 2-10 July 2016.

68 exhibitions, two full pages of events plus projects like the Gateposts Project.

You can flip through the guide soon on the website and in the meantime on the website you can read more about the artists and exhibitions.  When they are printed you'll be able to pick up a guide at the Stone Space Gallery, the Leytonstone Library, both near Leytonstone station, and many of the participating venues.

I will be participating in a few exhibitions and events:

I will have six to eight large paintings in the events room at the Heathcote Arms pub (you will pass it on the corner if you are walking from Leytonstone station to Norlington Road Studios.) My two paintings in the Waltham Forest Arts Club show at St John’s are a result of looking at gravitational waves a few years ago. I am working on some sculptures for that show as well; I am primarily a painter but often turn to sculpture when creating site specific work. I am making small acrylic paintings on paper from my Whole Picture series for the Art Grows on Trees in the churchyard. For the ‘Gateposts Project’ I will have a paper sculpture in a tree, some small art to take away and a pouch of flyers from my Have A Nice Day project (2004-ongoing) in the front garden of art lovers in Leytonstone.

Colourful Language

'Colourful Language'
A 2-week pop-up gallery at Hoe Street Central in East London.

Paintings by Julie Caves that are an unabashed declaration of a love of colour.

This show will have a wide range of works for sale: still lifes, abstracts, and landscapes in oils and acrylics on canvas, wood panel and paper. Julie lives and works in Walthamstow so is really happy to be showing in her local community. This will be a chance to buy work directly from the artist at affordable prices.

Misbehaviour Exhibition Travels to London

Misbehaviour Exhibition

“Misbehaviour”, a group art exhibition curated by Katja Rosenberg, showed at CMR Gallery in Redruth, Cornwall from 8 - 29 October, 2014.  It was a large group of artists from the UK and beyond. The full catalogue is available as PDF download here.

The exhibition will now travel to London.  So if you missed it you have another chance.

The group of artists will be even larger and the exhibition will be at the gorgeous Art Pavilion in Mile End (Victoria Park, East London) for ten days - Friday 13 to Sunday 22 February, 2015.

I have a painting in this show curated by Karl Bielik, about, among other things, the passage of time and decay.  It is fascinating to see the works in the walled garden space that show varying amounts of change - some more recent works have been nearly destroyed by the elements while others that have been exposed for longer loss less worse for wear.

As part of the Leytonstone Arts Trail 2014, Waltham Forest Arts Club, an artist-led organisation that creates community art projects and organises member exhibitions throughout the year, took an art exhibition out into the community, stopping to set up the exhibition for a short time and then moved to the next location.  This way we expanded the Arts Trail out from the centre.  

We were happy when we were loaned a milk float for the two mornings of the project.  We built the project around the float and named it ‘Art Floats’.  Unfortunately at the last minute the dairy found out their insurer had changed their mind and they had to withdraw.  With such a short time left Arts Club settled on a 7-seater and modified the display system for the artworks.  The car was decorated with balloons to go along with the original name.‘Art Floats’ was a mobile art exhibition in three locations on the two Saturdays of the Leytonstone Arts Trail, July 5th and 12th.  Starting at Hollow Ponds, across from the Alfred Hitchcock Hotel, at 10:00, it moved to St John’s Church near the tube station for 11:30 and the final setting-up of the exhibition was at 1:00 at Langthorne Park.  It was a quick-change take down of the exhibition each time with the group of artists following after the car in public transport with banners and signs saying: 'Follow us to Art Floats!'

Leytonstone Arts Trail 2014 Guide

The group exhibition includes artists Julie Caves, Helen Porter, Natalie Gray, Veronica Lindsay-Addy, Sue Higgins, Mo Morris, Valeria Bateson, and Olivier Tafforin.  Alongside the exhibition Nicolette Murin will be explaining the proposed new Art Lending scheme, as well as exhibiting an artwork herself. Brett Banks will be demonstrating his work on a small stone sculpture. There will be a chance to make something to add to the exhibition with the monoprinting workshop, materials provided by Jackson’s Art Supplies.
